Just when markets were enjoying a peaceful Saturday afternoon, Trump woke up and chose chaos. Out of nowhere, he announced the US needs to buy Greenland by June 1st.

Not negotiate. Not discuss. Buy.

And if Denmark did not play ball, he threatened fresh tariffs on basically half of Europe.

We’re talking Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the UK, Netherlands, Finland. The whole squad caught strays.

Initial tariff was set at 10 percent starting Feb 1st.
Then it jumps to 25 percent by June 1st.
And it stays there until Greenland is sold.

One day later, all 27 EU members rushed into an emergency meeting.

Some wanted diplomacy. Others wanted violence, but the economic kind.

There was even talk of a never used retaliatory package nicknamed the economic bazooka.

The problem is that this bazooka takes up to a year to actually deploy.

But markets don’t wait long. Risk assets got drained faster than your first beer on a Friday night.

Just as fast as the chaos started, Trump hit the brakes.

Late Wednesday, he announced the tariffs would not go live on Feb 1.

Why?

Because he had a chat in Davos with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and claimed they reached a “framework for a future deal on Greenland”.

According to Trump, it would benefit the US and all NATO members.

Small issue though. Greenland was not in the room. Denmark was not consulted.

Greenland’s representatives immediately came out saying this is not how any of this works.

One Danish MP summed it up perfectly: “This is not negotiations. It’s two men who had a conversation.”

Brutal.

Polymarket currently puts the odds of the US successfully purchasing Greenland at roughly 13 percent. Meaning the market is pricing a 87 percent chance this never happens.

Traders think this is more bark than bite. At least for now.

This situation is still early and extremely fluid.

Expect more headlines. More tweets. More volatility.

But if history rhymes, markets care less about the drama and more about whether this ends in another “talks are progressing” post.

Until proven otherwise, this smells like:

Weekend chaos. Midweek relief. Narrative whiplash.

Stay nimble. Stay liquid. And do not let a Greenland headline nuke your entire game plan.

Because if there is one thing markets hate more than tariffs, it is emotional trading.
